Green Chalice Ministry
Green Chalice Ministries in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) grew out of the 1977 General Assembly resolution developing a Task Force on Ecology. “We are Disciples of Christ connecting Christian faith, spiritual practice, creation care, environmental justice to support healthy communities, congregations and clergy in a climate changed world."
The Green Chalice Team at Salem First Christian Church was formed in January 2024. By August 2025, we met the required accomplishments in environmental improvements, conservation-restoration, worship/education, creation care classes, and community outreach. We are the first church to be certified as Green Chalice Ministry in Oregon.
What does it mean to be a Green Chalice Ministry? We are living our faith by caring for God’s Creation. As children of God and followers of Christ Jesus, we covenant to:
- Worship God with all creation and pray for the healing of the earth.
- Study the climate crisis and engage others in climate solutions.
- Repent and forgive for the harm we have inflicted on the earth that sustains life.
- Advocate for ecojustice public policies and witness by living sustainable lifestyles.
- Rest in God’s good creation and invite others to delight in nature.
