Beginning on Sunday, July 12, we will begin a series of sermons and Sunday School discussions on the issue brought up by the book, “The Shack”.

The purpose behind this series is not to promote the book. The purpose of this series is to help open up a variety of discussion points about our faith that will point us back to God.

The sermons will not be from the book as much as they will be about the subjects addressed in the book. The sermons will be focused on the biblical materials related to those topics. The Sunday School classes will follow an outline of discussion materials based on the book. At this point, it looks like from Middle School through adults, most of our classes will use the book for discussion materials.

The sermon schedule is as follows:

July 12, “Missy’s Question”. In the book, Missy asks, “Is God Mean?” The technical name for this topic is “Theodicy”. The non-technical name is “Why bad things happen to good people.”

July 19, “A New Vision of the Trinity”. While the word “trinity” is not found in the Bible, “trinity” is the way that we describe “Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” “The Shack presents a new way at looking at the relationship between “Father, Son and Holy Spirit”

July 26, “The Great Sadness”. This will be a look at depression/regret and grief. Rev. Myrna Phillip, a Marriage and Family Counselor with Salem Pastoral Counseling Center and a member of our congregation will be sharing this sermon along with me.

August 2, “A New Vision of Heaven”. There is a country and western song titled, “Everybody Wants to God to Heaven, But Nobody Wants to Go There Now.” Is heaven just sitting around on puffy white clouds?

August 9, “Forgiveness”. In this book, the main character is called upon to forgive the person who murdered his daughter. Is that kind of forgiveness possible? If so, how?

The book, “The Shack” will be for sale between services on Sunday or at the church office. The price is $8.50.

What Disciples Believe

Disciples Affirm:

  • Jesus Christ is the son of the Living God,
  • All persons are God's children

Beliefs and practices usually associated with Disciples include:

  • Open Communion. The Lord's Supper, or Communion is celebrated in weekly worship. It is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ.
  • Freedom of belief. Disciples are called together around one essential of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit study and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.
  • Baptism by immersion. In baptism the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust in God begins. Although Disciples practice baptism by immersion, other baptism traditions are honored.
  • Belief in the oneness of the church. All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.
  • The ministry of believers. Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth.
